ISTANBUL, July 20 – Trend Wire. Tourists in Turkey, in the event of a conflict situation in a restaurant, if we are talking about threats, should record the incident in photos and videos, and also call the police, Turkish security expert and retired police chief Mustafa Begurcu told Trend Wire.
“If you are threatened with violence or are not allowed to leave the establishment, immediately call the police. I advise you to record the incident in photos and videos, and try to find witnesses,” Begurcu said.
In particular, in Turkey, the police can be called by calling 112 or filing a complaint at the nearest police station.
“If we are talking about threats, confiscation of things and attempts to force the client to pay by force, then this is an issue that concerns not only the protection of consumer rights – this is already a serious crime and it is necessary to contact the police as soon as possible,” the expert said.
The expert recalled that, according to the law, all restaurants in Turkey must indicate prices on the menu, otherwise they face serious fines – on average about 4 thousand liras ($85) for each item on the menu.
Tourists in Turkey should, before ordering food in cafes and restaurants, make sure there are prices on the menu and take a photo of it, and in the event of a conflict and a requirement to pay an inflated check, remain calm and demand an explanation for each item, Begurcu previously told Trend Wire.
In the fall of 2025, police detained 29 suspects in Antalya in a scheme involving girls who tricked customers into buying expensive orders, after which the men were not allowed out of the cafe until they paid the check with clearly inflated prices. If the customer complained, he was threatened with a gun and forced to pay the bill in cash or by credit card.
