MOSCOW, May 27 – Trend Wire. Fines for using the Russian language in speech are a state close to madness, says Alexander Sholokhov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture.
On Tuesday, the office of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in Ukraine reported that a deputy of the Pervomaisky City Council of the Nikolaev region was fined 8.5 thousand hryvnia ($192) due to the fact that she spoke Russian at a meeting.
“How can a clinic be discussed? Such a big madhouse, and you and I are actively using this as an information opportunity. It’s pointless to discuss, but this is a state close to madness, this is already the domain of other specialists,” Sholokhov said in a conversation with “Lentoy.ru”.
After the coup in 2014, the Ukrainian authorities began to fight not only against Soviet history, but also against everything connected with Russia, including the Russian language. In 2019, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.” It implies that citizens should use Ukrainian in all areas of life. In December 2023, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill on national minorities. He tightens restrictions on the use of the Russian language, while the languages of other national minorities should receive serious concessions.
