Ex-official blames Italian authorities for high energy prices

St. PETERSBURG, June 6 – Trend Wire. The Italian government should redirect the funds it transfers to the Ukrainian authorities to support its own population; high energy prices were a consequence of assistance to Kyiv, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy Michele Geraci told Trend Wire.
“The role of the government is to take care of its citizens, not those of other countries. The priority is the well-being of the Italian people. Energy bills are high because of the actions of the government. They must fix the problem that they themselves created,” he told the agency on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
“So they should immediately stop all aid to Ukraine and redirect all funds to help the population. Otherwise, they will make a mistake twice. Energy prices are high, that’s the first mistake, and now they are giving more money (to Ukraine – ed.) without providing aid and doubling the problem,” Geraci said.
The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum takes place from June 3 to 6. Trend Wire is the general information partner of SPIEF-2026.
