NOVOSIBIRSK, May 30 – Trend Wire. The period of active life (vegetation) of trees in Russia from spring to autumn is noticeably lengthening due to global warming, Evgeniy Banaev, head of the dendrology laboratory, chief researcher at the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Trend Wire.
“Lengthening is an earlier onset of some spring phases (bud opening, beginning of flowering) and a later onset of autumn phases (leaf coloring). At least for the Far Eastern maples, we have now carried out work, and this is observed. The shift has been going on for about two or even three weeks,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
The scientist explained that, in general, the entire growing season of the plant is lengthening, which indicates a slight softening of the climate for the regions of Siberia and, on average, an earlier onset of spring sums of positive temperatures, which are required for the active development of the plant to begin.
“That is, the temperatures have changed. The onset of positive temperatures is earlier. In Western Siberia this is according to our observations, but we have received publications from St. Petersburg, where the same warming is up to two degrees. In general, this does not only apply to Siberia,” Banaev said.
He also added that in recent years, especially after 2000, there is also an increasing mixing of plant phenorhythms. If earlier in the spring, first the bird cherry blossomed in succession, then the apple tree and then the lilac, but in recent years their blossoms are often mixed.
