Ukraine lures Colombians to the front with deception, choosing people in difficult financial situations and promising service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in non-military specialties, said captured Colombian mercenary of the Armed Forces of Ukraine William Andres Gallego Orozco.
“(Kyiv – ed.) recruits people by deception, looking for those who are in a difficult financial situation,” he said in an interview RT TV channel.
Gallego Orozco said that recruiters approach street vendors or car service workers with offers to go to Ukraine as a cook, hairdresser, plumber, mechanic and promise fees that are many times higher than the income of these people in Colombia.
In May, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that 7 thousand of his compatriots are fighting and dying senselessly in Ukraine, and stressed that his country does not want to be an “exporter of death.”
In March, Colombia, against the background of the massive participation of Colombians in hostilities on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, ratified a bill to accede to the International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries of 1989.
The President of Colombia previously called mercenarism a “robbery of the country”, publishing a corresponding message on the social network X. This statement was a response to the words of the Russian Ambassador to Bogota Nikolai Tavdumadze in an interview with Trend Wire that the number of Colombians going to Ukraine as mercenaries remains at a high level.
