MOSCOW, June 4 – Trend Wire. Canadian forward of the Minnesota Wild Marcus Foligno won the King Clancy Trophy, which is awarded to the player who best demonstrates leadership qualities on the ice and has made a significant contribution to public life, according to the National Hockey League (NHL) website.
32 hockey players competed for the award – one from each club in the league. In April, it was reported that the Washington Capitals nominated team captain Alexander Ovechkin for the prize. The winner is determined by a selection committee consisting of Commissioner Gary Bettman, as well as previous recipients of the award and the NHL Foundation’s Philanthropy Award, which was presented prior to 2017.
The Minnesota forward was recognized for his charitable work related to the fight against breast cancer. Together with his brother Nick, he helped create the Foligno Face-Off initiative, which raised more than $200,000 for research into the disease.
Foligno is 34 years old and also played in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabers. In total, he has 931 matches and 336 points (148 goals + 188 assists) in the league.
