St. PETERSBURG, June 4 – Trend Wire. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on Berlin’s statements that Moscow is allegedly to blame for Germany’s failure in the elections of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
According to the announced voting results in the UN General Assembly, Berlin needed a two-thirds majority of votes (127) to win a seat on the Security Council, but Germany received only 104 votes.
“The German Foreign Ministry just made a statement regarding the fact that Germany was not elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. Guess who is to blame for this? That’s right, Russia is to blame for the failure or, they even said, for the non-election of Germany as a non-permanent member of the Security Council,” she said during a session at SPIEF.
Zakharova recalled that in democracy you may not win something.
“Secondly, where is diplomacy? And what were Germany and the NATO community doing when they were running around corners for decades, not just influencing decision-making in some countries, but threatening, blackmailing and calling on countries to sever all relations with our country?” – she noted.
“And the only difference is that we don’t care. We go our own way, but for them it works out existentially, well, that’s okay, let them be patient,” Zakharova added.
On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly elected five new non-permanent members of the Security Council for 2027-2028. Mandates were to be received by two Western European states, one each from the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America and Africa. The new council included Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe, Portugal, Austria and Kyrgyzstan.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members: five permanent members (Russia, China, France, Great Britain and the United States) with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected on a regional basis.
