Two trains collided in England. Someone died. According to British media, it concerns the driver. 89 people were injured, 33 of whom were seriously injured.

Emergency services are present in large numbers. Several trauma helicopters were also deployed.

The accident happened near Bedford, about 60 miles north of London. A train from Corby collided with a train from Nottingham. Both trains were en route to London St. Pancras station from the north of England, the train operator said East Midlands Railway(opens in new window).

According to Sky News(opens in new window) one of the two trains was stationary on the track due to a malfunction when it was hit from behind by the other train.

The Minister of Transport has launched an investigation. “British railways are among the safest in the world,” she told the BBC. “It’s very unusual for something like this to happen on our network.”

“It felt like a bomb attack,” an occupant of one of the trains told the British broadcaster BBC(opens in new window). He said some people had bloodied faces and others appeared to have broken legs. Another passenger told the BBC that she did not think the train was going fast, but that some passengers flew out of their seats.

Train traffic to and from London has been halted. Authorities are asking people not to go to the crash site. Buses have been deployed for stranded travelers who were not injured.
