The Netherlands sends mine hunter to the Mediterranean Sea, could later go to the Strait of Hormuz
The government is sending a mine hunter to the Mediterranean. Defense Minister Yesilgöz writes to the House of Representatives that the naval ship will become part of the permanent NATO mission there. But if necessary, the ship can also be quickly redirected to the Strait of Hormuz, she writes.
The naval vessel can be deployed there to ensure the safe passage of merchant ships and oil tankers when the strait reopens. Last month, the government announced that it was considering a military contribution to securing the Strait of Hormuz, which is now closed to shipping due to the war between the US and Iran.
Yesilgöz writes that the cabinet has not yet made a final decision on a contribution, but that preparations are being made. Sending out the mine hunter is part of this.
