A light show in Sydney, Australia ended unexpectedly last night when the drones that were supposed to perform the show crashed.

The public stood at a safe distance, but port workers told the news station ABC News(opens in new window) that it is a miracle that no one among them was hit. “They landed meters from the people I was with,” one of them said. According to the organization, no drone landed in places where the public could stand safely.

The organization blames the crash on an “unforeseen” change in the frequency over which the drones are controlled. Sabotage is excluded. What exactly went wrong is still under investigation. The shows scheduled for today and tomorrow have been canceled for the time being.

The Vivid Sydney Drone Show is part of a three-week winter festival that runs until June 13.
