RC Lens has won the French cup tournament for the first time. In the final they were too strong for OGC Nice 3-1.

The northern French team Lens has had a strong season under coach Pierre Sage and made it difficult for champion Paris Saint-Germain in the title battle. It fell short by six points, but with second place Lens qualified for the Champions League.

With the victory of the Coupe de France there was a second reward for the good season. In the past, Lens only won a French national title and the now abolished Coupe de la Ligue at a national level.

The three previous finals in the Coupe de France were all lost.

Lens took the lead in the 24th minute through Florian Thauvin in the Stade de France, filled with 80,000 fans. Shortly before half-time, striker Odsonne Édouard doubled the score, but Djibril Coulibaly did something in return for Nice.

Lens held firm in the second half. Fifteen minutes before the end, Abdallah Sima made the liberating 3-1.

After the lost final, Nice still has two important matches ahead of it. The southern French finished sixteenth in Ligue 1, meaning they will have to compete for survival against Saint-Étienne in a double play-off.

Earlier in the evening, Trabzonspor won the Turkish Cup for the tenth time in club history. Konyaspor was defeated 2-1 in the final.

Both Trabzonspor goals were scored by Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu. Former Ajax goalkeeper André Onana stood under the crossbar.

Trabzonspor, which as number three in the Turkish league was already assured of qualification for the preliminary rounds of the Europa League, last won the cup in 2020.

In the first half, which started a little later due to fireworks on the field, Trabzonspor was a lot stronger. It resulted in a quick and beautiful goal from Onuachu, who volleyed in a cross from the right.

Konyaspor, which had previously surprisingly settled with Fenerbahçe and Besiktas, then established itself. Shortly after half-time, Jackson Muleka leveled the score.

Not much later, things seemed to get even better for Konyaspor when the ball hit the spot after VAR intervention. But Onana saw Enis Bardhi’s effort end up on the post.

Onuachu remained calm from eleven meters ten minutes before the end and shot his team to the cup win.

Due to the defeat, Konyaspor, where former Go Ahead Eagles player Deniz Türüç was in the starting line-up and Riechedly Bazoer was missing, also qualified for European football.
