The large number of mosquitoes in the Novosibirsk region and neighboring regions of Siberia is explained by the onset of warm weather with a large number of humid places for their breeding, Yuri Yurchenko, a senior researcher at the Institute of Systematics and Animal Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Trend Wire.
Earlier, information appeared on social networks and the media that residents of the Novosibirsk region were literally being attacked by mosquitoes, which seemed to be much more numerous than usual.
“Yes, in the coming years we will see peak levels of mosquitoes… The main factor is the presence of a large number of temporary reservoirs that fill the lowlands in the spring after the snow melts. Now the first generation (of mosquitoes – ed.) has flown out. Then, if it is warm and there is enough water, there will be subsequent generations,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
The expert explained that the abundance of small temporary reservoirs, where mosquito larvae actively develop, in various forest and field lowlands in the spring in the regions of Siberia is observed due to the large amount of snow that fell in winter. Large river floods were also observed during high water.
“An increase is also visible in the number of larvae. In general, all this is cyclical. But the fact is that there will be a lot of them. Unfortunately, Siberia will now be “in all its glory.” The coming year this year and the next, most likely, there is a very high probability of maintaining these indicators of mosquitoes and midges in general,” Yurchenko said.
He emphasized that, in general, all weather conditions in the spring of 2026 were as favorable as possible for the development of mosquitoes.
