Rosatom is ready to buy surplus energy from the Metsamor NPP, Likhachev said

MOSCOW, May 27 – Trend Wire. Rosatom is ready to buy and export surplus electricity from the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in Armenia, said the head of the state corporation, Alexey Likhachev.
“We are ready to buy part of the electricity in case of surplus and export it to neighboring countries, to actively participate in business, in the operation of a nuclear power unit,” he said “Izvestia”.
There is one nuclear power plant in Armenia with two power units based on earthquake-resistant reactors of the VVER-440 type, commissioned in 1976 and 1980. The nuclear power plant was shut down in March 1989 after the Spitak earthquake, but the second power unit was re-commissioned in November 1995. With the help of Rosatom, its modernization was completed in 2021. The operating life of the existing nuclear power plant unit has been extended until 2026. The Government of Armenia adopted a resolution to begin the process of extending the operation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant until 2036.
