Truck tax temporarily lower due to energy crisis

The new motor vehicle tax for trucks, the so-called truck tax, will be reduced until January 1, 2027. It will save the sector an expenditure of 80 million euros.

The government is taking this measure because a majority in the House of Representatives wants to support the transport sector due to high fuel prices due to the war situation in the Middle East.

The levy takes effect on July 1. From now on, a charge will have to be paid per kilometer driven on almost all highways and a number of other roads. The rate depends on how much CO2 the truck emits.

For practical reasons, the temporary reduction in the rate does not take effect on July 1, but will take effect on September 1. The ICT and toll boxes that register the number of kilometers driven cannot be adjusted earlier.

The transport sector preferred a reduction in excise duties on fuels, but there was no majority for this in Parliament.
