St. PETERSBURG, June 3 – Trend Wire. A decision on introducing an export duty on diamonds is expected before the end of the year; final approval is currently underway, the head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aisen Nikolaev told Trend Wire on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Forum (SPIEF).
“There is a presidential decree being prepared, final approval of these issues is underway… A definite decision will be made by the end of 2026,” he answered a question about the current work on the mechanism for the export duty on diamonds and the possible timing of a decision on its introduction.
The head of the region emphasized that the introduction of a duty is being considered to support the Russian cutting industry.
According to him, the global diamond market in 2026 looks slightly better than in 2025.
At the same time, Nikolaev noted that for the Alrosa company a much more negative factor is the super-strong ruble.
In May, Deputy Minister of Finance Alexei Moiseev told reporters that the Russian Ministry of Finance hopes to introduce export duties on diamonds this year.
This year the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum takes place from June 3 to 6. Trend Wire is the general information partner of SPIEF.
